Hurricanes v Brumbies

The obvious challenge for the Brumbies here, following their brilliant performance in thrashing the Stormers, will be to overcome the taxing travel they've done over the past fortnight but they showed last week they're capable of overcoming the travel burden and I like them to be up for this. The Hurricanes meanwhile go into this off the back of a two-week break which is not always a good thing at this time of year as momentum is disrupted.

The Brumbies, through Fardy and Pocock, will trouble the Canes all game at the breakdown which is an area a lot of teams have not targeted against the competition favourites but the Brumbies certainly will and I can see them getting the better of the Canes in this department, which will interrupt a lot of their attacking flow. Another area of concern for the Hurricanes will be defusing the Brumbies maul from the line-out anywhere close to their own line.

The Brumbies boast the best defensive record in the competition and I like them to keep the Canes to a manageable total and either win or come very close to doing so – take the Brumbies with the start. Pick – 3 units on Brumbies +7.5 point start (BEST BET)

Waratahs v Highlanders

The loss of Beale for the Waratahs swings things towards a Highlanders victory for mine and I'm fairly happy with the fuel the Sydney-siders are feeding the hardened Southern men, with a cocky undertone to all they've said this week likely to provide the Kiwi side with even more motivation.

The Highlanders have the best halfback and fullback in the world at their disposal and from the base of the scrum and at the back Smith and Smith continue to lead the Highlanders to dominance; they're surrounded by hard working grafters all around them who have no ego and will go hard here. Meanwhile the Tahs will be lucky to make it through the entrance with some of the Sydney-sized ego's some of them are packing which will come back to bite them here.

I like the Highlanders to get the win off the back of unstoppable brilliance from their game-breakers (Smith, Smith, Naholo and Fekitoa) who will be well supported by a highly motivated and hard working side around them. Pick – 2 units on Highlanders to win by 12 points and under
