NRL Round 18 Picks

Eels v Roosters

Both these sides are coming off tough encounters against top-four sides with the Eels pushing the Sharks all the way only to run out eventual losers and the Roosters doing everything but beat the Bulldogs. It’s tough to place one of those performances ahead of the other as both sides played well and will rightfully go into this full of confidence.

Origin doesn’t have too much of an influence here with Guerra and Ferguson out for the Roosters and just Jennings out for the Eels; the Eels do have the slight edge in personnel changes though with Takairangi back from injury to slot into the centres and Manah returning at prop, two players that are likely to make an impact. The Eels have also named the experienced Robson to start at halfback in his first game for the club since being off-loaded by the Warriors and it’ll come as no surprise if he has his best game of the season to date as he looks to impress his new employers.

Pearce was a handful last week as he was involved in everything for the Roosters and holds the key for them here but the Eels have plenty of dangerous players of their own and have consistently played with full effort and plenty of heart, especially at Pirtek Stadium. The bookies have the two sides close with the Eels taking the slight favouritism; I can’t argue with that and see this going either way with nothing in it at the final whistle. Pick – 2 units on either team to win by 6 points or less

Bulldogs v Tigers

The Bulldogs have come right of late putting their early season inconsistency behind them and now sit fourth on the table with this game shaping as being another two points they can bank when you compare the two sides on paper.

The loss of Tedesco is huge for the Tigers as he’s been instrumental in their attack this season, add in the loss of Farah and Woods too and they start to look a little thin on influential players. The Bulldogs meanwhile look comparatively healthy with origin selection not having too much impact with just Klemmer and Jackson missing but the return of Eastwood off-sets that somewhat; they still have their spine intact and the backline that’s been so damaging of late.

It’s easy to see where the Bulldogs points will come from after they smash the Tigers up front and unleash their potent backline and anything but a very large win would surprise. Pick – 3 units on Bulldogs to win by 13+ points

Panthers v Sharks

The bad luck of Cartwright in missing out on origin selection is good luck for the Panthers as they have the young star lining up here and he’s likely to make a big impact as he thumbs his nose at the NSW selectors. With just Mansour and Moylan picked for origin from the Panthers side they’re considerably better off for this clash than their opposition who have five players out – Bird, Maloney, Gallen, Fafita and Graham – players who have been instrumental to the success they’ve enjoyed this season.

With twelve wins on the trot now the challenge for the Sharks is to not let their guard down which they did for large periods of last week’s game against the Eels but were good enough to rally and get the win, this week however without five of their stars one can’t help but feel their streak is about to end.

There’s a lot to like about the youthful exuberance the likes of Cleary, Watene-Zelezniak, Cartwright and Peachey bring to the Panthers, all are capable of bamboozling defensive lines with their raw skill and unpredictability and once they get a roll on they’re very tough to stop.

This shapes as a crucial game for the Panthers season and at home they’ll be very much up for it; it’s hard to see the Sharks on the other hand lifting to the same level with so much disruption. Pick – 3 units on Panthers -4.5 or better point start
