NRL ROUND 15
Rabbitohs v Eels
After their loss to the Tigers last week the Rabbitohs now sit at 12th on the ladder with just five wins for the season – very surprising for a side that was one of the preseason favourites to win the title; meanwhile the Eels clocked up their eighth win of the season with a gutsy effort against the Titans.
Despite losing two big names in Inglis and Reynolds the Rabbitohs still look the pick of the sides on paper; Keary is likely to show his class as he takes over the main attacking duties – something he’s more than capable of and up front big Sam Burgess should fire up and be a handful for the Eels defence.
There’s no doubt this Eels side is full of character as they showed last week in overcoming injuries and off-field distractions but the Rabbitohs are a proud club and will not be happy with the season to date – they should not be written off just yet though and I believe the underdog status for this game will sit well with them as they grab the win at good value. Pick – 2 units on Rabbitohs to win and 0.5 units on Rabbitohs to win by 13+ points
Dragons v Storm
The Dragons cannot seem to buy a trick with effort this season not equating to results, whilst the effort levels have been high though their execution on attack has been dreadful and faced with one of the best defences in the competition here they really will have to sharpen up to get across the line.
Smith and Cronk are the glue for this Storm side and their absence here is the reason the Dragons start as favourites – I can’t argue with that though as despite the Storm being superbly coached and organised you take out that chunk of leadership and ability and it does leave a huge hole.
I expect another performance full of effort here from the Dragons who tend to put in their best efforts at WIN Stadium and they should do enough to get the much needed win. The Strom defence will ensure it’s not a blowout so we’ll take the value in the Dragons to win in the margins. Pick – 2.5 units on Dragons to win by 12 points and under
Warriors v Roosters
The Roosters are a side in major turmoil sitting at 15th on the table the minor-premiers of the last three seasons have all but lost any hope of making the top eight and one gets the feeling they haven’t quite bottomed out yet with another heavy loss here on the cards against a Warriors side who certainly have their tails up.
The transformation of the Warriors over the past two weeks has been remarkable with two big wins over the Broncos and Knights, they’ve been average at Mt Smart Stadium this year though so will be desperate to repay their loyal home fans with a huge performance. They do lose Lillyman and Vatuvai for this clash but that’s off-set by the loss of Ferguson and Guerra for the Roosters, in fact the Warriors come out on top in that exchange.
When they’re bad they’re very bad but when they’re full of confidence the Warriors are very dangerous and I can see their attack, led by a rejuvenated Johnson, clocking up a big total against this weak Roosters defence here – we’ll take them to cover the line on offer. Pick – 3 units on Warriors -7.0 point start
Titans v Sea Eagles
One couldn’t help but feel very sorry for Trent Barrett on Sunday after his Manly side gave up a 20-point lead in the second half to lose to the Panthers, they’re a team with character though and will be determined to bounce back here – assisted by the return of Taupau and Lyon. Just the one origin absence for the Titans but it’s a very significant one with Bird having been outstanding for them all season and his leadership and outright ability on attack will be badly missed.
Manly do lose Myles and Walker to origin but Lyons return means he can slot into five-eighth and Taupau’s return is a big boost up front with the human wrecking ball likely to have a huge game as he makes up for the time lost whilst suspended.
I sense an upset could be on the cards here – we’ll play it safe though and take the line with just a dab on the Sea Eagles for the win. Pick – 3 units on Sea Eagles +6.5 point start and 1 unit on Sea Eagles to win
