NRL ROUND 10
Dragons v Raiders
The Dragons are a tough team to get a gauge on this season with some good wins followed by lethargic, error-filled performances such was the case two weeks back when they handed the Warriors the game on a platter. They’ve been pretty good at following up dreadful efforts with solid ones though and it’s tough to overlook the value on offer for them to win here against a Raiders side that don’t have a great record at Jubilee Oval.
I’ve said it in many of the Dragons encounters that on paper man for man they look the stronger of the two sides and it’s no different here, the problem they’ve faced is cohesion on attack but they’ll have welcomed the fortnight off to work hard on this.
The Raiders have been solid this season and the Dragons will have to muscle up on defence to stop their big forward pack but this will be a desperate Dragons and I back them to stop everything the Raiders throw at them and to grind out the win. Pick- 4 units on Dragons to win
Panthers v Warriors
The humiliating loss to the Storm on ANZAC Day was the straw that broke the camel’s back for Warriors fans, the club and pretty much anyone associated with the club and, at least in the near future, there’s no way we’ll see anything less than 100% effort from them on the park.
There are some big-guns back on deck for the Warriors here with Leuluai, Lolohea, Matulino and Thompson returning with the latter two in particular likely to be raring to go following their club imposed suspension.
The Warriors put up a rather makeshift looking side to face the Dragons two weeks back and they performed admirably with an obvious lift in intensity on defence and whilst they still made plenty of mistakes it was encouraging to see the effort was there as I expect it will be again here.
Despite this being a Panthers home game they’ve opted to play it in Christchurch which is a big advantage to the Warriors as they’ll have the crowd behind them. I can’t help but feel the shake-up the clubs had over the past fortnight will be the equivalent of poking a sleeping bear and they’ll absolutely rip into this – take the Warriors at good value for the win. Pick – 3 units on Warriors +3.5 or better point start and; 1 unit on Warriors to lead at halftime and fulltime
Titans v Roosters
It’s a dangerous time to be playing the Roosters as they clearly have ground to make up on the points table now they’ve got close to their full squad available; motivation levels will not be an issue and I expect once again for Pearce and JWH to have huge games as they enjoy being back on the field following a long break.
The Titans have some big ‘ins’ for this clash with Shillington, Pettybourne and Don all returning and I’m expecting a much improved performance following their last outing where they were humbled by a rampant Storm 38-0.
Man for man there’s not a huge gulf of talent between the sides as their forward packs match up pretty evenly but it’ll be Pearce’s influence in the halves that’ll be the difference for mine as he looked hungry and switched on in his comeback game against the Knights and his combination with Hastings in the halves has more venom in it than the Roberts/Taylor combination the Titans have named.
I can’t see this being a blow-out but I can see the Roosters having just that bit more hunger in them and the cool head of Pearce could well prove to be the difference. Take the Roosters to win in the margins. Pick – 1.5 units on Roosters to win by 12 points and under
