A-LEAGUE WEEK 9
MELBOURNE VICTORY VS PERTH GLORY
After gliding past Newcastle last week and seeing Perth being beaten by the Central Coast, Victory will be full of confidence for this match. They will welcome back their first choice keeper Lawrence Thomas which will add a bit more familiarity within the defence and with Perth consistently conceding goals, I can see Victory taking this one at home. Rojas was excellent last week and I fully expect him to deliver once again if given the service. Perth won't have Catsro, Williams or Risdon for this one either and that will make this all the much harder for them
CENTRAL COAST V WESTERN SYDNEY WANDERERS
An interesting match here as the ever inconsistent Central Coast take on WSW, a team who remarkably haven't seen a win since beating Adelaide in Round 2. Having drawn a league high 5 times this season already, it certainly outlines the struggles that Western Sydney have in finding that elusive win. Santalab is efficient and works hard whenever he is on the pitch but he often finds himself getting into unnecessary scraps after lunging into a challenge. I don't mind the enthusiasm but he needs to focus on goalscoring, as does a number of his teammates.
Central Coast did a number on Perth at home to somehow jump into 6th on the ladder. I don't want to say that they can't win because they are becoming quite the thorn for a lot of teams, however, this game has draw written all over it for me.
MELBOURNE CITY V BRISBANE ROAR
The A-League marketing team couldn't be happier with how the FFA cup final went. A 1-0 victory and Tim Cahill the lone scorer. Cahill lifting the trophy will now be used over and over again as promotion for the A-league and seemingly looks like money well spent. The squad should be well rested as the match itself, although fiery in some parts, was generally in control by City.
Injuries may play a part in this match as Brett Holman has been ruled out for over a month and that man Tim Cahill did come off injured at the end of the match, the extent of the injury is still unknown but time on the sidelines is a given.
I fancy City to have the upper hand in Melbourne but the Roar squad have a habit of buckling down and grinding out a result when needed. Maclaren and Fornaroli cant stop scoring at the moment but I have a feeling the unders might be a play.
NEWCASTLE JETS VS SYDNEY FC
The good early signs that Newcastle have shown are now well and truly forgotten. They haven't tasted victory since the 4-0 drubbing of Brisbane Roar, something that certainly seems light years away. They face the beaten finalists and league leaders in Sydney FC and although they just lost the final, you have to imagine that their main focus is most definitely the league this year and they would be fully focused on making the best impression there.
Newcastle have injury concerns in every position and with Sydney having the momentum and history on their side, I can see them continuing their winning ways. A tough time to face Sydney for the Jets.
ADELAIDE UNITED VS WELLINGTON PHOENIX
When will the defending champions win a match ? Leicester City find themselves in real trouble in the EPL but this top to bottom story is much worse. Adelaide are in real trouble and the longer they go without a win, the longer this story will go for Amor and co. They've lost heavily with players in the off season and haven't come close to replacing players like Goodwin and the lack of quality is certainly showing.
Wellington are a good squad who have had some mixed results recently. They have had excuses when they have lost but I think this will be a good chance to get an away Victory at a price. They'll be missing McGlinchey but Krishna seems to have found a bit of form.
They aren't world beaters but their price is far too good against a team who haven't even won a game yet
