RUGBY LEAGUE
Another NRL rort?
18:48
Friday 26 August |
The integrity of the sport of Rugby League
in Australia has once again been questioned with allegations of a player
initiated sting in a match last round. It is believed that Bulldogs prop
Ryan Tandy is the player at the centre of an NRL betting investigation
on the match between North Queensland Cowboys and Canterbury Bulldogs
played last weekend.
As ninemsn reports, "In the early exchanges of the match, Tandy dropped
the ball when attempting a quick play the ball, and then seconds later
flopped on a North Queensland player forcing a Cowboys penalty right in
front of the posts."
Bookmakers around the country were smashed with significant and unusual
bets on a North Queensland penalty try being the first scoring option.
The price moved from 12.00 into as short at 3.00 before being taken off the board at
most if not all betting shops country-wide.
Is Tandy guilty? See him interviewed
here.

Bookies fight for publicity
16:22
Friday 6 August |
Mainstream media have reported this week
that
Sportsbet
have laid a $500,000 bet on St Kilda at 6.00 winning this year's AFL
Premiership. "Clearly this punter thought the price was too good to
refuse - he has had an account with us since April, but this is the
first bet he's placed," a Sportsbet spokesman said.
Industry speculation however, is that the punter in question may not
exist. And given Sportsbet's history in severley restricting winning
punters, it does appear rather odd that the
Paddy Power
controlled bookie would accept a bet to lose $2.5 million.
Rival
TAB Sportsbet
today responded by issuing a Press Release titled, "St Kilda $6.50 –
Best price in Australia – Friendless at TAB Sportsbet!"

BOXING
Bout ends in farce; lands massive plunge
23:31
Wednesday 21 July |
The reputation* of the sport of boxing has
taken another blow tonight when Paul Briggs dropped to his knees in the
opening round of an IBO cruiserweight world title bout against Danny
Green in Perth.
From AAP: "Danny Green's IBO cruiserweight world title bout against Paul
Briggs ended in farce after Briggs was knocked out just 29 seconds into
the first round by a punch that hardly touched him. Briggs stumbled a
few steps, dropped to the canvas and was counted out after copping a
mere graze to the head from a weak Green left jab that would have hardly
fazed a commoner in the street."
Some facts: The "Danny Green Round One" result was backed from as much
as 13.00 (TAB Sportsbet) into 1.50 (Centrebet) before the fight. Most
bookmakers took the market off the board on the day of the fight. On the
day before the fight, a client of one Darwin-based bookmaker wanted to
have $30,000 on a Round One knockout at 8.00. TAB affilates of Centrebet
are believed to have stood the Round One result for a six-figure sum.
*OnThePunt is no way suggesting that the result of this bout was
100% fixed.

Barlow refund at Sportsbet
21:49
Sunday 4 July |
Sportsbet
has refunded bets on Fremantle's first-year sensation Michael Barlow to
win this year's Brownlow Medal. Barlow was the outright third-favourite
for the medal at 9.00 behind Gary Ablett Jnr and Luke Hodge before
breaking his leg in the dying minutes of Saturday's clash against Port
Adelaide.
"We didn't even have him in the market at the start of the season," said
Sportsbet's Haydn Lane. "He's been amazing this year and the least we
can do for punters who backed Barlow for the Brownlow is refund their
bets after the cruel end to his season."
Earlier this season,
Sportsbet
paid out more than $150,000 in bets on Richmond for the Wooden Spoon
after just four rounds. Following the Tigers' win against Sydney this
weekend, West Coast are now on the bottom of the ladder. "At the time we
thought it was a great idea as Richmond didn't look like winning a match
let alone getting off the bottom of the ladder," said Lane. "It looks
like that bright idea will now cost us more than $150,000!"
